The Power of Facebook Friends List

Continuing with the focus on Facebook, in this week’s video, I demonstrate the power of creating and using Facebook Friends lists. Similar to Twitter lists, Facebook allows you to control you receive information from, and how you can communicate directly with a group of particular friends. When used effectively, the friend list is an excellent way to stay connected with businesses, sales leads, marketing, etc.

Facebook is a valuable tool both professionally and personally but you might have concerns with how much is shared and with whom. Facebook does a great job of giving you the ability to adjust several security settings to minimize those risks.  Setting up several Friends list on Facebook is a great way to separate your business and personal friends to see only certain Facebook posts.

For example, I’ve created a business list which includes friends that are connected to my business.

When you post a status update, notice the little down arrow next to the POST button, it might say “PUBLIC” or perhaps “FRIENDS ONLY” or “FRIENDS OF FRIENDS”. Click the arrow and select what list your update should go to. Note: You may have to click the More Options link in the drop down, then the Custom link to find your list.

After your post has been published you will see it on your profile, but to friends and to the public not specified in the list the post will not be displayed. The friends on the list will see the post in their news feed and on your profile.

The other great feature of Facebook friends list is that it allows you to view the status updates of only those in that list. This option removes the clutter from the Facebook newsfeed.

So have a go at creating friends lists on Facebook. I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s video. Let me know in the comments below.
